The resistance band overhead press is a beginner friendly compound exercise that uses a vertical push movement pattern to train your upper body. Also called a resistance band shoulder press, it requires only a single resistance band and a bit of floor space.

This movement primarily targets the shoulders, specifically the anterior deltoid and lateral deltoid. Your triceps also work as supporting muscles to help extend your elbows at the top of the press.

How to do it

Stand on the center of a resistance band with your feet shoulder width apart and hold one end of the band in each hand. Bring your hands up to shoulder height with your palms facing forward and your elbows pointing down.

  1. Brace your core and keep your chest up.
  2. Press the band straight up toward the ceiling until your arms are fully extended.
  3. Pause briefly at the top of the movement.
  4. Lower your hands back down to shoulder height in a slow and controlled manner.
  5. Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.

Sets, reps and load

Start with three sets of ten to twelve repetitions. Rest for sixty to ninety seconds between each set.

Choose a resistance band that allows you to complete your target repetitions with good form but feels challenging on the last two reps.

Common mistakes

  • Arching your lower back. Tighten your core and squeeze your glutes to keep your spine neutral.
  • Flaring elbows too wide. Keep your elbows tucked slightly forward rather than pointing straight out to the sides.
  • Rushing the descent. Take two to three seconds to lower the band back to the starting position.
  • Bending your wrists backward. Grip the band firmly and keep your knuckles pointing straight up toward the ceiling.

Make it easier or harder

Easier

  • Perform the exercise seated on a chair to reduce the required core stability.
  • Stand on the band with only one foot to decrease the overall band tension.

Harder

  • Stand with your feet wider apart to increase the tension on the band.
  • Pause for three seconds at the top of every repetition.

Before you load it up

  • Pressing or reaching overhead can irritate a painful shoulder. If raising your arm overhead hurts, use a partial range or a different angle and get it checked.

When to see a doctor or physio

  • Sharp or stabbing pain in your shoulder joint during the press.
  • Numbness or tingling traveling down your arm into your fingers.
  • A grinding sensation in your shoulder that is accompanied by pain.
